    Is marijuana legal in Turkey?

    Marijuana, weed, is a sensitive subject in many countries. Some countries are moving towards accepting and legalizing marijuana. This move, like any other decision, has divided people and some are protesting against it. But, what about Turkey? Is marijuana legal in Turkey?

    Turkey, to no ones surprise is a conservative Muslim country. put conservatism and religion next to each other, and you will have extreme views on anything that might alter the mood. It is no secret that the president of Turkey is against the use of alcohol. He has repeatedly tried to stop the consumption of alcohol in Turkey. His decisions has lead to loss of job for many who worked as a bartender or those who sold alcohol. Drinking alcohol however, wont send you straight to jail, yet.

    Weed is illegal in many countries. Turkey is among those countries. The use of Marijuana in Turkey is not only illegal, but it also is a taboo. You will be looked down on if you are a pothead in Turkey. But what does the Turkish law says about the use of marijuana?
    Possession of marijuana can land you in jail for 1-2 years. of course, you can opt to receive treatment or probation for up to 3 years. This is only if you had the weed for personal use. If you sell or supply marijuana however, you can be spending 5-10 years in jail in Turkey. The punishment is worse if you are trafficking marijuana. Trafficking of the illegal substance carries a minimum of 10 years in jail.
    If you are working as a doctor or law enforcer in Turkey, the punishment is twice as harsh for you.
    It is a myth that if you are a tourist, your punishment will be less sever. So, good idea is to leave weed alone if you are visiting Turkey. The laws of Turkey does not care for you stance on the use of marijuana.

    Is medical marijuana a thing in Turkey?
    In 2016, Turkish laws allowed sublingual cannabinoid medications containing CBD such as Sativex to be used with a doctor’s prescription. However, even with a prescription, people of Turkey are reluctant to use the substance due to the harsh punishments for the use of marijuana.
