Tuz lake (Tuz Golu) is located in a large area on the central plateau of Turkey, approximately 105 km northeast of Konya. This part of the central plateau of Turkey is an arid region. After Lake Van (Van Golu), this lake is the second largest lake in Turkey. The water of this stagnant lake is so salty that if you walk along the shore and then sit by the lake, after drying your feet, you will clearly see salt crystals on your feet. The water of Tuz Lake is supplied by surface waters and the two main rivers that flow into this lake. In most months of the year, the water of this lake is very shallow and rarely reaches 1 meter. During the hot summer months, the water depth reaches its minimum, and due to the large volume of lake water evaporating, a thick layer of salt forms on the shore, which reaches a thickness of 30 cm. These salts are collected and refined and consumed as table salt throughout Turkey. It is interesting to know that 63% of the salt consumed in Turkey comes from Lake Tuz.
Lake Tuze is home to halophilic microorganisms such as the microalgae Dunaliella salina . If the growing conditions are right for these microorganisms and the salt concentration and light intensity are sufficient, these microalgae will turn red due to the production of protective carotenoids. These red pigments cause Lake Touz to change color and turn blood red. Occurrence of this phenomenon every year in summer attracts many tourists.
The lake is home to salt-loving algae as well as a variety of bird species, including flamingos, white-breasted geese and a small falcon called the Lesser kestrel.
