Make-up classes are being held in quake hit zones of Turkey

Turkey's unfortunate earthquake affected lives of many of it's citizens. People lost their loved ones, properties and possessions. Student's lives were also affected heavily. many had to miss school for months until replacement temporary schools were available. Since those students missed a bunch of school, there was a great demand for make-up classes. As of August 1, a monthlong program has begun for students in 11 provinces of Turkey affected by powerful earthquakes in February. This program offers make-up classes in various subjects for both primary and secondary education, as reported by local media on Wednesday.

The earthquakes caused extensive destruction in the southeastern region, including homes and schools, hindering access to education. However, over the course of one to two months after the disaster on February 6, some unaffected schools gradually resumed classes. Additionally, efforts were made to repair many schools in Hatay, one of the worst impacted provinces.

To compensate for lost lessons, thousands of students across the region applied for the make-up classes, which were made available through the Turkish public broadcaster TRT. Students in preschool, primary, and secondary schools eagerly returned to their classrooms, reuniting with friends and teachers.

In Hatay alone, make-up training courses were offered in 104 schools across 15 districts for basic education. Around 7,411 students are expected to benefit from these courses to recover the educational losses caused by the earthquake.

At Kuzeytepe Mehtap Mehmet Olgar Secondary School, the make-up education began with 220 students in six classes. The courses covered subjects like Turkish, mathematics, science, and English.

The make-up program encompasses both basic education and secondary education, with 301 courses and 50 high schools participating. Approximately 943 students are registered for the courses, and they will receive 30 hours of lectures each.

Participation in the make-up training is not compulsory, and the program is set to conclude on September 1.
