    Nowruz in Turkey

    Nowruz has always been an important event in many countries along the Silk Roads, including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Iran, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

    This day marks the beginning of the new year in countries such as Iran. However, since many countries nowadays don't follow the same calendar as Iran, this ancient holiday is just that for them: a day to celebrate. The people of each region have a special reason for happiness and joy on Nowruz. Some people consider Nowruz to be the new season, some people consider Nowruz to be the time when night and day are equal, and some people consider this time to be the beginning of the creation of the earth, or the time when Noah set foot on the earth. The official calendar of Turkey is set according to the Gregorian calendar.
    Since Turkey is one of the great neighbors of Iran, there has been a lot of cultural exchange among the two countries. Nowruz is an accepted event among the Turkic-speaking people of the world.
    In Turkey, Nowruz is known as Sultan Nowruz or Nowruz Sultan.

    Nowruz customs in Turkey

    The people of each city, in accordance with the rituals and customs they received from their predecessors, prepare in a special way for the beginning of Nowruz.
    People living in the villages of Malatya know Nowruz as a holiday and celebration of the end of winter.
    In Ghazi the locals consider Nowruz to be a young girl who migrates to the east on March 21. Some also consider Nowruz as a dervish who is able to fly and flies on March 21.
    The people of Aghri, on March 21, which coincides with Nowruz, are fortune-tellers to interpret their fortune-telling by listening to the conversations they receive from this work, and to know whether their intentions will be fulfilled or not.
    On the other side of Gire Sun, Nowruz is also known as Mart Bozumo. On such a day, by collecting water from neighboring areas and pouring it on their animals, they spend such a day creating goodness and blessings.
    The people of Edirne, set fire to old mats and jump over them. In this ritual, while jumping over the fire, one seeks health and avoid disaster for the family and those around. The summer travelers also announce their arrival by lighting a fire on March 21, and the summer residents, to greet the travelers, if they have more than 20 sheep, sacrifice one of the sheep to the travelers and hold a feast by preparing food.


    Cities that celebrate the New Year in Turkey

    Nowruz, which is an ancient Persian holiday, is celebrated by the people of some Turkish villages and cities. The most important event of this celebration is lighting a fire and dancing next to it. The people of the region celebrate Nowruz by lighting fires and entertaining their loved ones. People living in Diyarbakir, Maraş and Mersin in eastern Turkey, such as Kars and Ardahan, attach great importance to Nowruz. People in bigger cities like Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Adana also encourage people to buy on this day with interesting discounts and campaigns, and also celebrate Nowruz by holding concerts, baking sweets and spreading it in the streets. .


    Common rituals in Turkish Nowruz

    People with strong religious beliefs make pilgrimages to religious sites and shrines. Some people do good deeds for this day by cooking food and sweets and distributing it in the city and among the deprived. Dancing is also common in many areas.
