Turkey takes steps to protect women and health workers

Turkey has been making impressive progress towards social justice lately. Not long ago, they announced their plans for opening more women shelters in Turkey. Now, Turkish Parliament adopts bill protecting women, health workers.

This new bill, is hoped to reduce violence and casualties that women and health workers face. The bill is expected to help the government, which has been struggling to keep domestic violence in check while trying to reduce the number of “health care violence” crimes committed by patients or their relatives and friends.

This bill introduces harsh punishments such as life in prison with no possibility of parole for manslaughter against women. It also increases prison terms for deliberate injury, threat and torture if the victim is a woman, regardless of their relationship with the perpetrator. This bill also addresses the issue of stalking. Stalking others physically, through tools of communication (via phone, online messages, etc.), or using third parties, will be subject to prison terms from six months to two years.

If health workers are attacked or harmed, the perpetrators will receive harsh penalties under the new law as well.
