When you hear wildfire, your mind might go to Australia, or the USA. However, Turkey has its own wildfires and they are becoming a recurring nightmare for the region.

Southwestern Turkey is once again fighting wildfires. Last year Turkey had one record breaking wildfire in the Marmaris region. Airplanes and helicopters have been deployed to Marmaris to extinguish the flames that have been spreading across the forest since late Tuesday. This fire has been the first major forest wildfire in the "fire season" in the Marmaris region unfortunately.

    What caused the fire?
The wildfire originated in the town located in Muğla province and the cause is still unknown.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said 1,393 personnel, including 592 employees from the General Directorate of Forestry, responded to the fire as well as 338 vehicles and 35 pieces of construction equipment from various institutions and organizations.

Turkey has suffered from more than 2000 wildfires last year alone! at least eight people have died to these fires and with soaring temperatures, low humidity and strong winds, the situation might get worse.

Now, what can you do to stop these wildfires as a person?
Sometimes the cause is not a human being or a mistake. Sometimes the temps get so high that the fires can start on their own. We can do nothing then. However, sometime, we are to blame.
If you go out camping in the forest and make a fire, you need to be extra careful and responsible. Make sure to dig a proper fire pit, and put out your fire and bury it beneath soil to prevent the embers from catching fire again. it also helps if you carry a small fire extinguisher with you to manage things if it got a bit out of hand.
