    Harmonization program in Turkey

Turkey is a popular destination for tourists. Every year, thousands of students and immigrants choose Turkey as a destination to move to, and Turkey is well aware of this fact. Turkey is trying to be intentionally dense when it comes to immigrants, it seems. On one hand, they try to make it harder for foreigners to stay with tourist visa, on the other hand, they are holding harmonization programs to help foreigners better assimilate in Turkey.

Lately, Turkish authorities are pursuing an ambitious harmonization program for foreigners to help them better adapt to their new home. To achieve this, Turkey has built lots of learning centers across the country. This project, despite a pause during covid lockdown, managed to reach out to 1.5 million people. The directorate says “harmonization” is something bound by laws for better services for foreigners and insists it is not “assimilation” or “integration,” but rather developing a “mutual understanding” between the migrants and the society. This program covers 8 hours of classes and is free for everyone aged between 17-65.

What do you learn in these harmonization classes?
You learn about social life in Türkiye, customs, the legal system and other topics in the interactive classes. You also learn about the rules of common living spaces, rights and responsibilities, and you are informed about emergency numbers and how to use a hotline.

What language do they use to teach in the classes?
They use interpreters in the harmonization classes to better facilitate the learning.

How to apply to harmonization classes?
Foreigners can apply to the programs through a website or through local branches of the migration directorate and at lifelong learning centers that are common in most neighborhoods in every city and town.

Once you complete your classes, you are provided with a SUYE certificate. The certificates are required for the extension of legal residence, travel permits, visas and other procedures, as well as for acquiring Turkish citizenship.
