New Electronic Airport Transit Visa Requirements at Istanbul airport

Starting April 15, 2024, individuals traveling through Istanbul Airport to Mexico, Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela from India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Chad, Somalia, Cameroon, Mauritania, and Yemen will be required to obtain an electronic airport transit visa.

This requirement is part of Turkey's efforts to regulate irregular migration, as it holds a significant position as both a transit and destination country in global migration trends. According to VisaGuide.World, Turkey has been actively combatting irregular migration.

To address the rise in irregular migrants using air routes via Turkey from various Middle Eastern and Latin American countries to reach North America, enhanced inspections are being implemented in accordance with international aviation standards.

Turkish Airlines had previously cautioned passengers traveling to South American destinations about the possibility of additional checks beyond standard passport and visa procedures.

Additionally, new control requirements have been confirmed for passengers traveling to Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela. As a result, travelers bound for Venezuela must now use Caracas Simon Bolivar Airport for entry, and those with connecting flights must enter Venezuela before continuing their journey.

Passengers entering Venezuela must possess several documents, including a visa confirmation indicating the purpose of travel, proof of paid accommodation for their entire stay, a return ticket, and a notarized invitation letter.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has finalized the implementation of the electronic application for airport transit visas, which can be obtained free of charge through their website. Applicants need to provide accurate personal and address details, as well as ticket numbers.

These e-transit visas allow visits to Turkey for up to 90 days. Upon arrival at Istanbul Airport International Transit Passenger Hall, passengers with e-transit visas will have their documents verified at designated visa points before proceeding through security to the departure level, aiming to streamline transit while enhancing security measures.

Passengers affected by the e-transit visa requirement must carry printed copies of their visas during transit at Istanbul Airport.

Diplomatic sources have confirmed that the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has completed all necessary preparations to introduce the electronic application for airport transit visas (e-HTV).

Airport transit visas are part of Chapter 24 on Justice, Freedom, and Security in the European Union accession negotiations and play a role in the Visa Liberalization Dialogue with the EU.
