Terrorist attacks are unfortunate. There are no words to convey how a terrorist attack make people feel. Turkey, unfortunately, has its fair share of terrorist attacks and unfortunate incidents.
Few days ago, Istanbul was hit by a terrorist attack which lead to death of several people and injuring many more. It is not the first time that Istanbul has been targeted in the past years, and something tells me it wont be the last time unfortunately. If you are currently staying in Istanbul, or planning to visit soon, you might ask yourself is Istanbul safe after the terrorist attack?
This is not an easy question to answer. After all, the purpose of the terrorist attack is to terrorize the people of a nation. It is your completely natural to be afraid and want to return home, or cancel your trip. But should you?
Officials and authorities in Turkey are trying very hard to convey the message that Turkey, especially Istanbul, is safe after the terrorist attack. The Turkey propaganda machine is hard at work trying to say that tourism is not affected by the terrorist attack, that tourists feel safe, they want to stay more now after the attack, and everything is honky dory. Just take a look at this article put together by Daily Sabah, a Turkish news outlet. They interviewed tourists and one of them said this gem apparently: “They told me to go back to my hotel and stay indoors. But I told them this was what terrorists wanted, (to scare people). So, I am back in Istiklal. People need courage, not fear,”
My skepticism aside, even I have to admit that Turkey knows how to increase security measures after an incident, especially in the busier districts. Armored cars and troops on every intersection and corner can make people feel a sense of security, or in my case, more fear. So, if you want to measure the safety of Istanbul with the presence of police and special guards after the attack? sure, Istanbul is safe.
Terrorist attacks are very unfortunate events which can affect the whole nation. Be vigilant and safe, and if you see anything suspicious, let the police know. we are in this together.
