    Is Turkey an aging country?

Aging is a big concern for any country. Countries want a young work force to exploit and turn into slaves, therefore they put in place policies to incentivize the young people to produce like bunnies. Most of the time, the policies are nothing but an empty promise to put a band-aid on the problem. Most notable of these countries are located in East Asia, such as Japan and South Korea. But what about Turkey? How is the outlook for Turkey in a decade or two? Is Turkey an aging country?

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) released the 2021 “Population and Housing Census” figures on Monday. Turkey, as of 2021, has more than 84.6 million of population. Despite the fact that the population saw an increase since 1927, Turkey is concerned with aging. Turkey's population growth rate has dropped from 21% in 1935, to 12.7% in 2021. This 12.7% growth of population apparently is not enough for Turkey and the authorities are very concerned. While this concern does not mean that Turkey is an aged country like Japan, it means that if the trend continues it will be. It is noteworthy that Turkey attributes (blames) this increase in aging on better healthcare. People are living longer so, the country is getting older.
The median age was 21.2 in 1935 and rose to 33.1 in 2021. This age was 23.4 for women in 1935 and rose to 33.8 in 2021 while a dire change was spotted for men, from 19.1 to 32.4.

Some other interesting discoveries from the TurkStat census are
    • Turkey has more homeowners than tenants, which is funny because the country has a housing cost crisis.
    • Turkey has almost even number of men and women in 2021.
    • The number of unmarried men is higher than unmarried women.
    • Literacy among women is at an all-time high, with only 4.2% being illiterate.
    • The number of illiterate men in 2021 in Turkey is only 0.8% of the population.
    • On internal migration, statistics show more than 2.7 million people migrated across Türkiye’s 81 provinces in 2021.
    • This is the list of foreign born people who are residing in Turkey now, in order: Bulgaria, Germany, Iraq, Syria.
    • The number of foreigners residing in Türkiye was more than 1.7 million people in 2021. Iraqis took first place at 18% among foreigners, followed by Afghan and Iranian nationals.
    • The majority of households were owners of their own home, while the share of those living in rental accommodation was announced as 27.6% by TurkStat.
