Turkey produces a vast selection of textiles, ranging from lightweight summer fabrics to ornately embroidered velvet. Basically, there is a textile for everyone in Turkey. Here are different kinds of textiles in Turkey:

    Şile bezi
It basically means summer months, therefore it is an extra airy and lightweight cotton fabric that is turned into summer dresses. Named after Şile, the seaside region north of Istanbul proper, the fabric has traditionally been produced by local rural women who wash the fabric in the Black Sea and lay it to dry out on the beach itself. Turkish cotton is also used to create colorful pashminas. Decorated with a classic "evil eye" charm, you can find peshtemals in every color of the rainbow in Turkey. You can find this fabric basically anywhere in Turkey, as well as at the Şile Yeryüzü Pazarı, held Fridays and Sundays, and specializing in locally produced food products and textiles.

    Denizli dokuması

Producing pure cotton fabric and textiles dates back to 4000 years in province of Denizli in Turkey. So it is no wonder that textiles that come from this region are highly sought after. These fabrics are known for being moisture absorbent and breathable and come in an array of colors obtained from natural dying methods using walnut leaves, onion skins, sumac and acorns as well as many other herbal, root and plant sources.
You can buy these textiles at Arasta bazaar, grand bazaar and jeniffer's hammam in Istanbul.

    Yazma
Yazma means writing in Turkish. This textile is either hand-painted or block-printed to create it's unique patterns. Yazmas can be regularly found at local weekly bazaars and fabric stores.

    Ikat
This fabric is created from binding and tieing the threads. The patterns in Ikat is applied to the threads before it is woven into fabric. This results in a textile with unique color patterns and blending. Grand Bazaar, such as at the shop Dere Gözü, more upscale applications of the fabric are available at the Mudo Collection home accessories chain and at the designer pillow shop Yastık By Rıfat Özbek in Nişantaşı are good places to look for Ikat.

    Suzani
Suzani is basically embroidered textile that originates from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. The word means needle in Persian. Nurem is a shop that stands out for purchasing the textile itself, which can easily be used on furniture, as a bedspread or wall hanging. The online shop Enjoy Istanbul also has a wide variety of styles and applications that are easy to peruse.
