    If you live in Turkey, you probably have noticed that soon there is going to be a presidential election soon. This election seems to be a an important one for Turkey. But politics aside, how will the election day affect your life as an expat?

    There are a couple of things that you should know about the election day in Turkey. There are a couple of schedule changes, a few bans on this and that. lets get in to it
    What is the election day in Turkey?
    Every 5 years, there is a presidential election day in Turkey. It is overseen by the supreme election council YSK. The vote tends to be on Sundays and if you are a Turkish citizen and are above 18, you can vote. After the vote YSK will announce the results and that's that.

    How will the election day in Turkey affect you?
    10 days before the election, the political advertisements and propaganda will go through the roof. It is the time of campaigning and they'll do everything to annoy you by blasting their loud music, propaganda etc. City square will be a place to hold campaign meetings and there will be more traffic. then, The freedom to campaign and conduct propaganda allowed for the 10 days before the election will come to a close as of 6 p.m., May 13. Publishing polls, surveys, or anything that could influence votes is also prohibited in the 10 days following the country’s vote.
    The voting hours are from 8 am till 5 pm. So, during this time, traffic will be extra annoying.
    On election day, the sale of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited from 6 a.m. until midnight and many entertainment venues will be closed or restricted to solely serving food to patrons. Coffeehouses, teahouses and internet cafes will be closed on election day. Weddings may be held after 6 p.m. on the day. Also of note, schools will be closed on Monday, May 15.
