The river passes through picturesque landscapes, including deep valleys, dense forests, and rocky cliffs. It is known for its pristine natural beauty and is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing. The surrounding area is characterized by its rich biodiversity, with various plant and animal species found in the region.

The village of Barhal, located along the river, is a charming settlement with traditional wooden houses and a historical stone bridge spanning the river. The area offers opportunities for visitors to experience rural life, taste local cuisine, and explore cultural heritage.

The mayor of Yusufeli in Artvin, northeastern Turkey, recently highlighted the growing popularity of the Barhal River among domestic rafting and canoeing enthusiasts. According to reports from Anadolu Agency (AA), a group of seven individuals, accompanied by the mayor Eyüp Aytekin, embarked on an exhilarating rafting adventure along the untamed waters of the Barhal River.

Covering a distance of approximately 10 kilometers (6.37 miles), the athletes successfully navigated the course until reaching the point where the Barhal River merges with the Yusufeli Dam lake. This area, which was submerged after the construction of the Yusufeli Dam and hydroelectric power plant in November 2022, offers captivating scenic views and has been attracting local canoeists and sports enthusiasts.

During the excursion, the raft encountered a whirlpool that caused it to capsize, throwing the athletes into the water. However, they swiftly regained control of the boat, managing to recover and complete the course successfully.

Following the thrilling rafting experience, Mayor Aytekin spoke to AA, highlighting Yusufeli as an ideal location for adrenaline sports. He emphasized the exciting nature of the Barhal River, which originates from the foothills of the Kaçkar Mountains and hosts numerous rafting enthusiasts throughout the year. Mayor Aytekin, who personally enjoys rafting whenever possible, extended an invitation to all rafting and nature enthusiasts to visit the district.

Artvin province, known for its towering mountains, crater lakes, lush green forests, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife, is a gem of the Black Sea region. With mountains reaching heights of up to 4,000 meters (13,000 feet), this northeastern province bordering Georgia has emerged as an alternative destination for adventurous individuals and nature lovers.
