Is there any organization to help you quit smoking in Turkey?

Addiction is a serious issue. If you think you are struggling to quit on your own, away from your home country, don't worry. There is a hotline in Turkey to help you quit smoking. Since 2015, over 130,000 people in Türkiye have successfully overcome their addiction to cigarettes, thanks to the life-saving Alo 171 "Quitting Smoking Counseling Line" established by the country's Health Ministry, as reported by Anadolu Agency (AA) on Wednesday.

Dedicated counselors on the hotline work tirelessly to offer personalized advice and guidance to individuals, assisting them in their journey to quit smoking. In cases where needed, callers are directed to numerous smoking cessation polyclinics located throughout the country.

Health institutions in Türkiye provide unwavering support to those seeking to break free from tobacco addiction. This support is accessible through the 24/7 hotline operated by 158 personnel and the smoking cessation polyclinics, which have expanded their services to all health institutions, according to AA reports.

The hotline motivates people to quit smoking through encouraging interviews and nicotine addiction tests. Based on the results, individuals with low-to-moderate addiction levels receive personalized smoking cessation plans if they wish to proceed. Those identified with high levels of addiction are referred to health institutions, where they can receive smoking cessation services under the supervision of medical professionals. The hotline also facilitates outpatient clinic appointments for these individuals.

This toll-free hotline receives an average of 1,000-1,500 calls per day as of this year. People who have a smoking cessation plan made through the hotline are followed up for one year with return calls, if they give their consent.

The aim is to support individuals throughout the smoking cessation process, increase their motivation, and help them cope with nicotine withdrawal symptoms or physiological difficulties.

In 2022, 37.6% of individuals who received regular calls and follow-up support reported successfully quitting smoking, making significant progress towards a healthier life. A client satisfaction survey conducted last year revealed that 98% of hotline users were satisfied with the services provided.

Additionally, smoking cessation polyclinics in health institutions across Türkiye offer specialized support to individuals with high levels of addiction. Those who begin smoking cessation treatment through the Alo 171 line benefit from control appointments and regular calls from the counseling line.

Under the guidance of healthcare providers, these individuals may also access scientifically proven smoking cessation medications and nicotine replacement therapy preparations, provided free of charge by the Health Ministry.

To ensure continuous care, the ministry uses the Tobacco Addiction Treatment Monitoring System to track the progress of individuals seeking help from smoking cessation outpatient clinics and using prescribed medications.
