    Festivals of Turkey

    Turkey hosts several festivals such as the Republic Day Festival, the International Children's Day Festival, the Cappadocia Festival, and so on.
    Numerous festivals are held in different cities of Turkey, among which we can mention the Victory Day Festival, Ramadan or Eid al-Fitr Festival, Sports and Youth Day Festival, etc., which we will discuss in more detail below.

    1. Republic Day Festival

    Republic Day is one of the most important public holidays and national festivals in Turkey, which is held in honor of the start of the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923. Many people celebrate the event by attending shows, participating in traditional mass marches and bands. The founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, declared Republic Day the most important holiday in Turkey. The event includes the Turkish flag, pictures of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, a government ceremony at Çankaya Presidential Palace, art and fireworks events in Istanbul, concerts and a gathering with a lantern in Izmir.

    2. Victory Day Festival

    The Victory Day Festival is held every year on August 30th. At this national ceremony, flags and pictures of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk often adorn shops, government offices and people's homes. This day was in fact the last stage of the Turkish War of Independence, and celebrations are held in honor of Ataturk (the founder of the Republic of Turkey). These celebrations include the parade of the army, the demonstration flights of the Air Force.

    International Children's Day is celebrated annually on April 23 as a national festival and is one of the most unique festivals in the world dedicated to children. The children go to the Turkish parliament and symbolically run the country for one day. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk dedicated April 23 to the children of Turkey, because he considered them the future generation of the country, and in 1927 it was chosen as Children's Day. In 1979, UNICEF recognized this important national day as an international event in the world.

    4. Sports and Youth Day Festival

    May 19 is an official holiday in Turkey and is called Sports and Youth Day. On this occasion, sporting events and government ceremonies are held in cities across the country. In fact, on this day people celebrate Ataturk's historic arrival in Samsun, which marked the beginning of the 1919 War of Independence. In addition to carrying the Turkish flag from Samsun Port to Ankara, young people also perform sports, parades and singing. In fact, in 1936, Ataturk himself proposed the May 19 be a day to focus on and celebrate the youth, and as a result, it was declared a holiday in 1938.

    5. Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival

    One of the most amazing annual festivals in Turkey is held in the 2,000-year-old Roman Aspendos Roman Theater in Antalya. The Aspendos Theater is one of the oldest theaters in the world, and holding such a festival in it brings together the events of the past and the present. The festival includes some of the most famous international operas and ballets from several prominent countries, which will be held in June and will continue until July.

    6. Cappadocia Festival

    Another extraordinary and unique festival in Turkey is the Cappadox Festival, which has been held in the Cappadocia region from June 14 to 19 every year since 2015. The festival includes music, contemporary art, cooking and outdoor events, and showcases the work of well-known local and international artists.

    7. Five festivals of the Istanbul Culture and Art Foundation

    The Istanbul Culture and Arts Foundation (IKSV) hosts five film, music, theater, jazz and design festivals each year that will definitely double the fun of traveling to Istanbul. The film festival is held every year in April for 10 days and is the largest film festival in Turkey, showing international and Turkish films. The music festival features performances by some of the most magnificent orchestras and bands from around the world from late May to late June in Turkey.
    The Theater Festival is the newest of the five festivals, which began in 2002 and hosts theater companies and dance groups from Turkey and abroad. The ceremony will take place in the second half of November.
    The Jazz Festival has been held since 1994 with the participation of local and international artists in various jazz disciplines in the first half of July. The last festival in the list of five IKSV festivals is the design festival, which once every two years, presents design ideas from domestic and foreign companies. The ceremony runs from September 22 to November 4, 2018.

    8. Rock and Coke Festival

    To see the biggest rock festival in Turkey, be sure to travel to Istanbul. The Rock n'Coke Festival, which began in 2003 and takes place July 16-17 at Hezarfen Airfield, is sponsored by Coca-Cola. The festival hosts some of the most famous rock musicians in the world, such as Limp Bizkett.

    9. Rumi Festival

    Rumi (Molana) Celebration Festival will be held from December 10 to 12 in Konya, Turkey. This spiritual festival is one of the religious and cultural festivals in the world. In this ceremony, the dervishes (Sama dancers) move around in a circle and throw their black robes on the ground before beginning their ascetic dance. In this festival, one can understand why Sufi Muslims believe that "our only goal in life is love." Sama dervishes have been celebrating Rumi's death (on December 1) for about two years as the wedding night (the night of his joining God). People of any religion can attend the ceremony, and women must wear headscarves when entering the ceremony and sit apart from men.

    10. Festival of Sacrifice

    The Festival of Sacrifice, or Eid al-Adha, is a four-day religious ceremony in Turkey that includes sacrificing animals in special ways, visiting relatives, and helping the poor. This holiday is one of the oldest Islamic holidays in Turkey. On the first day of the festival, men from each family go to the mosque to pray for the day, followed by a sacrificial ceremony. Families give two-thirds of the sacrificed animals' meat to relatives and neighbors, and the remaining one-third to the needy, and treat them to sweets, coffee or Turkish tea, and delicacies.

    11. Ramadan celebration

    Ramadan (Eid al-Fitr) is one of the official holidays in Turkey that lasts for 3 days. In fact, after a month of fasting, they celebrate these 3 days, which is one of the most important rituals of Islam. These days, people go to see relatives and pay their respects to the elders. Giving sweets, coffee and desserts during the festival is one of the festivities of the festival, and children can watch shadow performances for free. The most important feature of this ceremony is seeing and visiting neighbors, family and friends. The little ones go to kiss their parents and it is customary to give a small gift or money to the children who kiss the older ones.

    12. Istanbul Shopping Festival

    The Istanbul Shopping Festival will be held from June 7 to July 2 in Istanbul, Turkey. This event is one of the most important festivals in Turkey and turns this traditional city into a paradise for shopping. In addition to shopping, visitors can enjoy cultural activities, shows, concerts, parades, etc. Extraordinary discounts and low prices give every tourist enough reason to buy whatever she likes. The shops are open until late at night or even 24 hours a day, and it seems that during this festival, the city of Istanbul does not sleep even for a moment.

    13. International Culinary Festival

    The Istanbul International Culinary Festival will be held from February 22nd to 25th, with the aim of establishing links between the culinary culture of Turkey and other foreign countries. Turkish and international chefs compete in more than 70 categories, and the festival aims to help the country's food tourism economy.
