The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Council gave its nod to a substantial 25% rise in water rates, affecting both residential and commercial customers on September 15th 2023.
This decision was made during the second Extraordinary General Assembly of the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (ISKI), which took place at the municipal headquarters in Saraçhane. The meeting was presided over by Ömer Faruk Kalaycı, the second Deputy Chairperson of the Assembly.
The primary focus of the assembly was the deliberation of ISKI's proposed water sales and used water disposal tariff. The proposal aimed to address various levels of water consumption and introduce a gradual price adjustment.
According to the proposed changes, residential water rates would undergo a significant revision. In the initial stage, covering consumption levels ranging from 0 to 15 cubic meters, the current rate of TL 16.50 ($0.61) would be raised to TL 20.62. In the second stage, for consumption levels exceeding 15 cubic meters, the price would remain at TL 23.75. For higher consumption in the third stage, surpassing 31 cubic meters, the rate would increase from TL 29.68 to TL 32.34, ultimately reaching TL 40.42.
The proposal also outlined modifications for commercial establishments. It recommended a phased pricing system, with the first stage covering consumption between 0-40 cubic meters, where prices would surge from TL 43.23 to TL 54.03. In the second stage, for consumption exceeding 41 cubic meters, rates would rise from TL 50 to TL 62.50.
The proposal was unanimously accepted in its proposed form. The approved hike in water prices is slated to take effect following the necessary approvals. This decision is anticipated to have a significant impact on water bills for residents and businesses throughout Istanbul.
