Watch out for this unauthorized activity in Turkey's classrooms

On Wednesday, the Ministry of National Education (MEB) issued a formal statement, explicitly prohibiting the presence of initiatives like "room parent" or analogous unofficial roles within schools lacking legislative authorization.

The Ministry's General Directorate of Basic Education, in a circular disseminated to all 81 provinces, addressed the contentious issue surrounding the "room parent" practice.

As per the official communication, the Ministry received complaints about specific parents, predominantly mothers, assuming the role of "room parents" in certain schools. These individuals were alleged to be collecting funds under the guise of "dues" for diverse class needs, participating in endeavors to acquire educational materials, and at times, interposing in classroom activities.

Furthermore, concerns were raised about these individuals capturing images of students, potentially violating personal data protection laws, and disseminating these images across various social media platforms.

The circular served as a reminder to educational institutions about the stipulations related to "student health" and "student safety" outlined in the Ministry's Preschool Education and Primary Education Institutions Regulation.

It underscored that the Ministry-appointed teachers should be responsible for executing the educational processes within schools, entrusted with molding the future in accordance with scientific principles and national educational objectives. This process should prioritize the students' best interests, aligning with their age and developmental stages.

The interference of unauthorized individuals in the educational milieu was explicitly flagged as disruptive to the quality of education and contradictory to pedagogical principles.

The missive from the Ministry urged schools not to endorse or allow practices such as designating class mothers or similar roles lacking legislative sanction.

Educational institutions were strongly advised to exercise prudence in handling this issue, with explicit instructions to implement necessary measures to conform to the directive.
