The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) has recently rolled out a revised fee structure for graves and funeral services, sparking heightened apprehension among residents regarding the expenses associated with burial procedures.
Under the newly instituted tariff by the IBB, the charges for unoccupied graves within the city now span a range of TL 4,470 to TL 69,770 ($153.92 to $2,402.39), with rates varying based on specific categories.
During the fourth session of the IBB meeting convened this week at the municipality building in Saraçhane, presided over by the first deputy chairperson of the assembly, Zeynel Abidin Okul, discussions predominantly revolved around the proposed fee tariff for cemetery services slated for implementation from January 1, 2024. The commission unanimously approved the proposed tariff.
Noteworthy aspects of the updated tariff include several revised fees: coffin burial costs have been adjusted from TL 480 to TL 740, briquette sarcophagus expenses from TL 1,200 to TL 1,850, grave transportation costs (excluding ground fees) from TL 2,420 to TL 3,730, single-story sarcophagus tombs from TL 3,000 to TL 4,620, and double-story sarcophagus tombs have increased from TL 4,000 to TL 6,000.
In the first group of cemeteries, encompassing Karacaahmet, Nakkaştepe, Çengelköy 1st Section, Zincirlikuyu, Aşiyan, Nafibaba, Ulus, and Abide-i Hürriyet, the lot price surged from TL 7,260 to TL 11,190.
The cost of an empty plot adjacent to a funeral rose from TL 22,630 to TL 34,890, reflecting a 54.15% increase in the price of an empty grave plot, escalating from TL 45,260 to TL 69,770. Furthermore, the venue fee for a child's funeral climbed from TL 7,260 to TL 11,190.
In the second group of cemeteries, including Emirgan, Edirnekapı, Merdivenköy, Küçükbakkalköy, Bülbülderesi, Feriköy, Sütlüce, and Avcılar, the cost of a cemetery plot rose from TL 1,320 to TL 2,030, an empty plot next to a funeral increased from TL 9,075 to TL 13,990, and an empty grave plot rose from TL 18,150 to TL 27,980. The venue fee for a child's funeral also saw an increase from TL 1,320 to TL 2,030.
In the third group of cemeteries, featuring Hekimbaşı, Kurtköy, Çekmeköy, Kilyos, Cebeci, and Kayabaşı, the plot price escalated from TL 110 to TL 170, the cost of an empty grave plot rose from TL 6,050 to TL 9,330, and the expense for an empty space adjacent to a funeral increased from TL 3,025 to TL 4,660. The venue fee for child funerals also saw an increment from TL 55 to TL 80.
In cemeteries classified in the fourth group, such as Ayazağa, Bahçeköy, Kemerburgaz, and Kısırkaya, which previously held village status, the place price increased from TL 110 to TL 170, the cost of an empty grave place rose from TL 2,900 to TL 4,470, and the expense for an empty space next to a funeral climbed from TL 1,450 to TL 2,240. The ground fee for a child's funeral also increased from TL 55 to TL 80.
