Hagia Sophia's new entrance fee 2024

Commencing January 15, a novel visitor management protocol is set to be instated at the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque. This initiative, part of the ongoing restoration and conservation endeavors spearheaded by Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, will usher in a clear demarcation between worshippers and foreign visitors exploring the cultural facets of the mosque.

As per a recent announcement from the Culture and Tourism Ministry, a distinctive arrangement will be introduced for mosque visitors. A designated ticket sales booth catering to those intending to explore the gallery floor will be established, operational from the aforementioned date. Positioned opposite the Fountain of Ahmed III, this booth aims to streamline the visitor experience.

The restoration efforts extend beyond mere structural adjustments, with historical precautions taken throughout the protected Hagia Sophia Mosque. Security enhancements include the installment of surveillance cameras, fire detection systems, and emergency announcement setups, as detailed in the ministry's statement.

On the gallery floor, meticulous cleaning and preservation activities have been undertaken by restorers and conservators. The marble coverings and wooden railings have undergone scrutiny and approval by the Science Board. Minister Ersoy's earlier announcement regarding a visitor management plan seeks to mitigate long queues at the historic mosque.

Entrance regulation at the iconic mosque will be orchestrated through the tunnel and entrance ramp beneath the Bayezid II Minaret on the south facade. Visitors will be efficiently guided to the gallery floor and directed to exit via the ramp in the northeast direction.

Tourists exploring the gallery section will be treated to views of the mosque's sanctuary floor, Ottoman-era annexes, and the opportunity to traverse the Door of Heaven and Hell (Marble Door), all while marveling at Byzantine-era mosaics.

Embarking on this new phase from January 15, the implementation of a QR code system at the mosque offers visitors information in 23 languages. This innovative system enables tourists to access information discreetly through their mobile phones, equipped with headphones or disposable ones provided, ensuring a seamless experience without disturbing those engaged in prayer.

Furthermore, in accordance with the ministry's statement, it has been disclosed that the entrance fee for foreign tourists exploring the historic mosque for cultural purposes will be set at 25 euros ($27.40).
