If you were planning to visit Galata tower in February or march 2024, you are out of luck. The Galata Tower will shut its doors to visitors from February 23, 2024, for a month, as it undergoes reinforcement against earthquakes and repairs to its exterior façade.
Last November, access to the tower's 8th floor was restricted due to ongoing roof repair. Concurrently, the preservation of the tower's spire was finalized and installed.
Ground-penetrating radar surveys were employed to inspect the structural integrity of the tower's walls and flooring.
Based on the findings, exterior façade repairs are scheduled. Special care will be taken during the restoration to ensure the safety of the approximately 400 migratory bird nests residing on the tower's walls.
All procedures will be conducted with consideration for the nesting and migration patterns of the birds.
This restoration project for the Galata Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Temporary List site since 2013 and a significant feature in Istanbul's skyline, is expected to conclude by April.
