Doner kebabs are now more expensive in Turkey compared to Germany

In Germany, the price hike for döner kebab, now at 10 euros per portion, has brought the issue of meat prices back to the forefront.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz, engaged in discussions over döner kebab prices in Germany, stated, "We operate within a free market economy, hence there won't be any price ceilings for döner kebab in Germany. However, inflation rates are already showing signs of decline in the country."

In Istanbul, döner kebab chefs voiced the necessity of adjusting their menu prices to accommodate rising costs, encompassing everything from employee wages to cooking oil.

Conversely, Türkiye's Butchers' Federation stressed that governmental support for livestock breeding could alleviate meat and döner kebab prices.

"When fuel prices surge, it triggers a ripple effect across various commodities, not just limited to meat products. Prices of staples like rice, oil, and potatoes skyrocket, often accompanied by additional taxes. When factoring in labor costs, all these factors contribute to price hikes. The government needs to reevaluate its pricing policies, as there's a significant surge not only in food items but also in plastic goods, packaging, and clothing," expressed an employee from a dining establishment.

Osman Yardımcı, President of the Turkish Butchers' Federation, highlighted that döner meat prices have surged approximately 70% compared to the previous year, emphasizing that prices could only see a downturn with governmental backing for cattle breeding.

"At present, the cost of meat for döner kebab stands at 550 liras. Considering a 20% waste and loss during the process, coupled with soaring chicken prices from 30 liras last year to 100 liras presently," he further elaborated.
