In 1502, Sultan Bayezid II, who had decided to build a unique bridge over the strait, asked the Italian architect and engineer Leonardo da Vinci to design such a bridge over the Golden Horn Strait.
Da Vinci also designed the original bridge, which was unique in its time, based on three well-known geometric principles (arc compression, parabolic curve, and incomplete arc).
The bridge designed at that time was 240 meters long and 24 meters wide and could have been the tallest bridge of its kind in the world. However, the ambitious design of Da Vinci was not accepted by Sultan Bayezid and was rejected.
In 2001, a smaller version of Da Vinci's Golden Horn design for Istanbul and Golden Horn Bay was implemented in Norway.

After that, Sultan Bayezid invited another Italian artist named Michelangelo to design the bridge, which he did not accept, and such a plan to build the Galata Bridge remained silent until the 19th century.
The first version of the Istanbul Galata Bridge was built in 1845 by the Sultan's mother and Sultan Abdul Majid's mother and was used for 18 years.

In 1863, before Napoleon's visit to Istanbul, the fortifications of the original bridge were strengthened by order of Sultan Abdul Aziz Osmani. In 1870 The British replace the old bridge with a new bridge, which was used until 1912. The current Galata Bridge Istanbul Galata Bridge, designed and built by Turkish engineers in 1992, is the fifth bridge in the Galata Bridge complex. Galata Bridge is 490 meters long and 42 meters wide today.
