From today, May 25 until September, night time visits to the beach in Antalya is forbidden. Why you might ask? well, because of Turtles!
That's right! In order to protect the endangered loggerhead sea turtles, aka Caretta carettas, Antalya banned nighttime visits and camping on 3 prominent beaches. These beaches are well known nesting ground for these turtles. From 8 p.m. in the evening until sunrise, the Çıralı, Olimpos and Patara beaches will be closed to nighttime swimmers and campers and those violating the ban will be fined $6,737 (TL 109,785).
Last year, 957 turtles were spotted in Patara beach, which lead to almost 17,000 baby turtles being born there.
So maybe, if you are in Ankara right now, or planning to be there for summer, exercise caution and be mindful of environment a bit more.
