The Rize-Artvin International Airport in northeastern Turkey was inaugurated in the presence of Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Presidents of Turkey and Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. The airport was built by filling a part of the seashore and consumed 3 million cubic meters of soil and concrete, with a runway length of 3 km and a width of 45 meters.
This is the second sea side airport in Turkey.
Construction of the airport in seawater on the shores of the Black Sea began in 2017, and the operation of concreting and creating land as the most important part of the airport was completed.
The airport is located 34 km from Rize and 125 km from Artvin and is expected to be used by about 3 million passengers a year.
Earlier, Urdu-Giresun Airport opened on the Black Sea coast, becoming the first Turkish seaside airport.
Transport Minister Adel Kara smailolu said the opening of the airport would also benefit the region's economy, adding that the airport would help develop the tourism industry in Artvin and Rize and also increase trade relations with neighboring countries in the region. East will be the Black Sea.
The Turkish president added that the project was designed and implemented in accordance with the architectural features of the area.
