Back in the 18th century, Bitlis was known as sort of an administrative district. A fort was built in Bitlis by the order of Alexander the Great. There is a lake and volcano called Nimrud in the province of Bitlis, named after Nimrud, the great king of Babylon, who is said to have ruled the region around 2100 BC.

Some iron, copper, lead and sulfur have been produced in Betlis since 1920, and small amounts of gold and silver have been found in the Siirt and Cairo regions. One of Betlis's largest exports is salt, which is exported to many large countries. Most of the Kurds in the province are engaged in the salt trade and have a special way of processing salt.
