    Things you need to know about TOMER

    If you are planning to study in Turkey or work there, maybe you have came across the term TOMER! So,
    What does TOMER mean? Who needs to get TOMER? Why do you need to get a TOMER?

    The word TOMER stands for Türkçe Öğretim Merkezi , meaning Turkish Education Center.
    This exam is one of the most famous and important entrance exams for Turkish language in Turkish universities.
    This test is very important for various educational centers, universities and it can be considered as one of the prerequisites for entering universities in Turkey, especially universities in which language of instruction is Turkish.

    TOMER as its name suggests, runs Turkish language classes in Istanbul.
    The purpose of holding this Turkish language test is to assess the skill level of the applicant who intends to study in Turkish universities or immigrate.
    This course is held by Turkish public institutions and universities in various cities from basic to advanced level.
    The applicant enters the next level by passing the exam in each level, and finally, by participating in 800 hours of class in 4 levels, they are ready to obtain a valid degree.

    Certificates of Upper-Intermediate and Diploma levels are used for entering university and the job market and Elementary and Intermediate level certificates are for everyday conversations.


    Different classification of TOMER

    TOMER qualifications are categorized as:
    Diploma and Sertifika (certificate)

    What is a TOMER diploma?
    When you get a TOMER diploma, it is valid for life time! Universities all over Turkey require TOMER diplomas to let you continue your studies.
    Applicants that want to study in Turkey must obtain a minimum score of C1 in this test, and those who want to work in Turkey need a score of C2.

    What is TOMER Sertifika then?
    The validity of this degree is between 6 months to 2 years and is held at both beginner and intermediate levels.
    The validity of the beginner certificate is 6 months and the participant in this test must obtain a score of B2 to be able to continue to the intermediate level that is valid for 2 years! To get the intermediate level you must obtain a minimum score of B1.
    At the end of the validity period of the certificate, the applicant must apply again to renew its validity.
    Just as the TOEFL test is administered by ETS, the TOMER test is administered by UTS, which stands for Uzaktan Turkce Sinavi.


    Different sections of the Tomer test

    In general, this test measures the skill of the participant in 5 sections; These 5 skills are:
    • Listening
    • Reading
    • Speaking
    • Oral description
    • Written description

    These sections add up to the score of 100. you need the minimum 50 to get an A1 level.


    Detailed assessment of TOMER score

    The levels of a TOMER score range from A1 to C1. You need the following scores to:

    • Minimum score 50 for A1 level degree
    • Score range between 50 to 59 for A2 level degree
    • Score range between 60 to 65 for B1 level degree
    • Score range between 66 to 70 for B2 level degree
    • Score range between 71 to 100 for getting Level C1 degree

    A1 test has the most basic and simple questions in it. At A2, you need to have basic Turkish skills to talk about your self. B1 and B2 requires you to handle yourself in different daily situations and be able to describe stuff. The highest level, C1 is the hardest to get and requires you to have a good command of the Turkish language. C1 Tomer enables you to study medicine and pharmacy in Turkey's universities.

    Who holds TOMER tests?

    The Tomer exam is held directly by Ankara University and all the work related to holding this exam, including registration, submission of documents and results, is done by this university. Of course, you don't need to go to Ankara to get a TOMER. Ankara University has different representatives all over the country for this purpose. There might be some of these institutions that hold TOMER exam in your own country too!

    • Two pieces of personal photo
    • Copy of passport
    Cost of taking the Tomer exam:
    • TOMER diploma costs about 150 Euros
    • TOMER certificate costs around 100 Euros

    • Register for the TOMER exam and pay the fee.
    • Take the placement test for TOMER exam which you can do on TOMER website after you register.

    What to study for TOMER exam?
    To learn Turkish and take the exam, you don't have to take any classes. You can study yourself! Of course, there are prep classes for TOMER available as well. Either way, the reference book for TOMER exam is the Hitit books.
