This year, 3,400 drummers will take to the streets of Istanbul to wake the people up before the dawn. How this usually works, if you don't know already, is that those who participate in Ramadan, will wake up before the dawn during Ramadan, eat a hearty breakfast, say their morning prayers and abstain from eating food till the nightfall. But back to the drumming. Depending on where you are residing, how old the neighborhood is, how religious it is etc., you might be startled during your sleep from the banging. This will keep going for 29 days this year, so you better get used to it or invest in ear plugs.

Drummers this year in Istanbul will be dressed in Ottoman costumes, and will be doing their drumming in 963 neighborhoods of Istanbul. They see it as their duty to wake Muslims up so they can start their fasting.

You should know that people who are participating in the drumming tradition, are trying to keep it alive so the next generations will also know it.
