In 2023, Türkiye experienced a troubling surge in traffic accidents, as revealed by data from the Traffic Directorate of the General Directorate of Security. The reported incidents included 2,984 fatalities and 354,234 injuries at accident sites.

Notably, Istanbul led in accidents causing injuries, followed by Ankara, which also reported a considerable number of fatalities. Approximately 1,216,860 vehicles faced traffic bans during this period.

Breaking down the distribution of traffic accidents resulting in fatalities or injuries across provinces, Istanbul topped the list with 25,614 reported accidents, trailed by Ankara with 15,344, Izmir with 13,468, and Antalya with 12,041 accidents. Conversely, Ardahan recorded the lowest number of accidents at 175.

A compilation by Anadolu Agency (AA) based on information from the General Directorate of Security Traffic Directorate revealed a total of 555,668 traffic accidents throughout the country, encompassing incidents involving fatalities, injuries, and property damage.

The breakdown of the types of traffic accidents in Türkiye indicated that 77,992 involved side collisions, 37,521 were pedestrian collisions, 28,106 were rollovers/skids/rollovers, 26,062 occurred off the road, 25,918 were general accidents, 13,403 resulted from mutual collisions, and 10,828 stemmed from collisions with obstacles or objects.

The report highlighted that out of the total traffic accidents resulting in fatalities or injuries, 99,200 were single-vehicle accidents, 121,724 were two-vehicle accidents, and 14,068 were multi-vehicle accidents.

Examining the causes of accidents, the data revealed that the majority, 249,776 instances, were attributed to driver errors. The leading cause, with 92,523 instances, was the failure to adjust vehicle speed according to road, weather, and traffic conditions. Other significant causes included neglecting priority at intersections, lane monitoring and changing violations, rear-end collisions, and non-compliance with direction change rules.

The data also provided insights into the types of vehicles involved in accidents, with automobiles, motorcycles, and pickup trucks being the most frequently affected.

Analyzing accidents by province, Istanbul recorded the highest number, followed by Ankara, Izmir, and Antalya. Interestingly, despite Istanbul having the most accidents, Ankara experienced the highest loss of life. The capital city reported 167 fatalities and 21,949 injuries, while Istanbul followed closely with 157 deaths and 32,631 injuries.

Conversely, Ardahan stood out as the province with the lowest number of fatal and injury-related accidents in 2023, with 175 accidents resulting in three fatalities and 309 injuries.

In the previous year, traffic police teams compiled 21,234,596 penalty reports, primarily targeting vehicle license plates, drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Notable violations included actions against drivers under the influence of alcohol, those accumulating 100 penalty points, and those exceeding the speed limit on multiple occasions.
