Can you work as a student in Turkey?

Student life can be tough. Not only you have to do a lot of studying and be under a lot of pressure academically, you also have to manage your expenses. Of course, since Turkey is student friendly, they try to help students as much as they can. Student subsidies for Istanbul university students is one example of their help. But if the help and subsidies are not enough, you might want to look for a job to earn extra cash. But can you work as a student in Turkey?

Every year, around 5000 foreign students get accepted into Turkish universities. Unfortunately, getting a full fund grant is not something that all the students can get. So, you might have to do some part time job to compensate and survive.

In Turkey, Students are allowed to work with their student visa with certain limitations. The rules and limitation for students who wish to work in Turkey are as follows:
    • Students are only allowed to work 30 hours a week.
    • According to the law, foreign students are not allowed to work in some public and private offices in Turkey.
    • According to the new international labor laws in Turkey, foreign students are allowed to work while studying in Turkey only in master's and doctoral degrees with a work permit.
    • Associate degree students do not have the right to work in their first year of study.
    • If graduate and undergraduate students benefit from a government scholarship while studying, even after completing their studies and finding a job, they cannot receive a work permit; This issue does not apply to postgraduate and doctoral students.
    • Foreign students should have their residence permit when they go through the application process for a work permit.
    • To obtain a work permit for foreign students, they must be over 18 years old .
    • For master's and doctoral students in Turkey, there are no restrictions on when they start working.
    • Master's or PhD students can work in the institutions they are studying without any restrictions on time, job or field of work.
    • Those international students who have traveled to Turkey with student exchange programs to participate in the internship of private or public institutions do not need to obtain a work permit. That is, students who complete their internship (paid or unpaid) need to obtain a residence permit to work in Turkey.
    • Students traveling to Turkey outside of student exchange programs , other than mandatory internships, must obtain a work permit in order to be able to intern for work experience or income generation. Foreign students who complete an internship can be insured and employed as workers.
What jobs are suitable for students in Turkey?
After obtaining your work permit (if needed) you have to look for something suitable for your needs. In Turkey there are some jobs that are more suitable for foreigners and students. Unfortunately, some of these jobs are the only jobs you can find after graduating even.
working as: a tour guide, a waiter, IT support, English teacher, nanny.

I should add that if you are fluent in Turkish language you can find better jobs.
