adopt a dog, get paid for it

Turkey has been struggling with stray animals over population recently. Not long ago, Turkey issued a ban on dangerous dog breeds after a serious dog attack. Ever since, we have been seeing more and more dogs being abandoned in remote areas of the cities. This dog abandoning, of course, is just exacerbating the stray dog situation. These dangerous breeds will end up mating with other feral breeds and create wild dog packs that roam the cities these day, making the situation much worse. This has even lead to a group to make a map of dog attack zones.

To combat this issue, a municipality in Turkey has come up with a solution for the rehabilitation of dogs and keeping them off the streets. Konya is the Anatolian heartland is now paying a monthly allowance to people who adopt dogs from its shelters. This project which is known as the "friends of animals" project, helped 6,744 stray animals find a new home.

Every month, the municipality pays TL 250 ($15) to people adopting dogs. The payment is limited to one dog in the city, while households in rural parts of Konya are allowed to adopt as many as three dogs to benefit from the dog care aid. Each animal is registered and tagged and municipality crews visit the families who adopted dogs regularly to check on them.

So, if you love dogs and live in Konya, but can't pay for its expenses yourself, maybe you can adopt one and help keeping them off the streets.
